A criminal arrest and conviction can cost you your freedom, your reputation and your future. If you have been arrested or charged with a crime in Suffolk County or Nassau County, the Central Islip criminal law attorneys at the Law Offices of Shawn R. Kassman are prepared to provide you with an aggressive criminal defense designed to bring about the best possible results.
A strong criminal defense begins with a thorough understanding of the facts and circumstances surrounding your arrest. We have extensive experience evaluating the strengths of your criminal defense, as well as weaknesses in the district attorney’s case that we can exploit. Our goal is to secure an acquittal or the best possible result by leveraging your case for a favorable plea bargain or presenting the strongest possible case at trial.
Our criminal defense attorneys have the time and resources to provide you with a quality defense, and our experience and knowledge of New York criminal law will assist you in evaluating any plea offers from the prosecution, a feat that is difficult for public defenders who have limited time and resources to expend on any given case.
Our Suffolk County criminal defense attorneys in Central Islip are well-versed in New York criminal law, and can provide an aggressive defense against the following criminal offenses:
When we represent you, we will meet with the district attorney to explore the settlement or dismissal of your criminal case.
If this is the first time you’ve been charged with a crime, Shawn Kassman will speak with the district attorney about your case on your first court date. Mr. Kassman will discuss the state’s position regarding your case, which is determined by the criminal charge and your criminal history, based on a background criminal history report. Before the district attorney may make an offer to the defense counsel, he or she requires this background check. The district attorney will speak with the complainant (the person making the allegations against you) before making a settlement offer.
We usually are able to negotiate a plea bargain, allowing you to plead guilty to a noncriminal violation. This prevents you from having a criminal record. Mr. Kassman also may negotiate an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal, which means your charges are dismissed six months to a year later.
In some cases, a trial is necessary. There are two types of trials: a bench trial, in which a judge hears testimony and makes the final ruling, and a jury trial, in which jurors hear testimony and issue a verdict. In either type of trial, the district attorney must prove your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Mr. Kassman is an experienced trial attorney who will protect your rights and fully investigate your case.
